Ellen Knodel 1908-2008

This is a photo of Grandma Myrtle (G.G.) and Grandma Ellen. Ellen passed away last week at the wonderful age of 100. She lived a long wonderful life and was cared for by her daughter Janet till the day she passed. I have to fill you in on the amazing story of how Ellen became Grandma.

Adams grandpa Herbert and his first grandma Lilly immigrated from Germany during WWII. As they set up their home here in the United States, they met another couple from Germany (Ellen and her husband). They and their children became the best of friends (in fact Gerda's middle name was given after Ellen's daughter Janet). After Ellen's husband passed away, Herbert and Lilly were devestated and rushed to be by her side. Lilly later battled breast cancer and then cervical cancer. She passed away in 1980. About a year later, the widow and the widower were married. Grandpa Herbert passed away in 2000. I know that Adams grandma Lilly would have been pleased to see her sweet husband spend the rest of his days with such a dear friend.

What a beautiful love story. It seriously could be turned into a movie!
